Adherence Packaging
We all love our pets and want to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. Sometimes, achieving this goal involves one or more medications and even one medication can be tricky to manage. Forgetting a dose of your cat’s heart medication or accidentally giving a double dose of your dog’s arthritis treatment can be detrimental. As a veterinarian, I hear stories like this all the time, and it can be difficult to provide real-life solutions.
At Koala Health, in addition to traditional medication dispensing in vials, we offer adherence or pouch packaging. Pouch packaging is a way to more easily and conveniently administer your pet’s medication. Pre-filled pouches contain all the medications to give at a particular time. The packaging clearly shows all the important information including the medication, dose, and when to give it. The goal is to make giving medication easier and keep your pet happy and safe.
The benefits of adherence packaging and having medications shipped directly to your home are numerous. In one study involving humans taking medications, adherence improved by 10% when using medications delivered by mail rather than picking up at the pharmacy. Another study shows that using medication adherence packaging increases compliance by 8%.
Translating this to our pets, when medication adherence improves, your pet’s medical issues become easier to manage and may require less veterinary follow-up. For example, running out of and restarting your cat’s thyroid pills may require rechecking a blood test to ensure nothing has changed.
